Bagels made their way to the United States via Jewish immigrants from Poland. The two most well-known types of bagels according to the website National Bagel Day, are the Montreal and New York styles.
What's the difference you say? Well, the Montreal style contains malt and sugar but no salt and is boiled in honey-sweetened water and then baked in a wood-fired oven. The New York style, on the other hand, has salt and malt and is boiled in water then baked in a standard oven.
“The New York bagel is puffier and has a smaller hole than its Montreal counterpart. Montreal bagels are sweeter and less dense. They’re also crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside.”
Did you know?... Canadian-born astronaut Gregory Chamitoff took a batch of 18 sesame seed bagels into space on his 2008 Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station - a first for bagels up in space!
Happy National Bagel Day!
