BANNERS: Public Sleeping Day! | February 28

Public Sleeping Day is an opportunity to sleep in public. We can think of a whole lot of places to sleep in the public eye. And, today is the day to do it.

You can sleep on a park bench. You can doze on a blanket on the beach. Some people may opt to sleep on the job.  They do so at their own risk.

BANNERS: Shrove Tuesday aka Pancake Day aka Mardi Gras aka ...

It's Shrove Tuesday! The day changes every year because it is determined by when Easter falls. It marks 47 days until Easter!

It is also celebrated as Pancake Tuesday or Pancake day in other countries and is the day in February or March immediately preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), which is celebrated in some countries by consuming pancakes. In others, especially those where it is called Mardi Gras or some translation thereof, this is a carnival day, and also the last day of "fat eating" or "gorging" before the fasting period of Lent.

This moveable feast is determined by Easter. The expression "Shrove Tuesday" comes from the word shrive, meaning "absolve". Shrove Tuesday is observed by many Christians, including Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists and Roman Catholics, who "make a special point of self-examination, of considering what wrongs they need to repent, and what amendments of life or areas of spiritual growth they especially need to ask God's help in dealing with."

Hooray for almonds! Happy National Almond Day!

The almond is native to the Mediterranean climate region of the Middle East, eastward as far as the Yamuna River in India. In Iran, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and other Central Asian countries, it is known as bādām. It was spread by humans in ancient times along the shores of the Mediterranean into northern Africa and southern Europe, and more recently transported to other parts of the world, notably California, United States.

In 2017, the National Flag of Canada is celebrating its 52nd anniversary. Canadians are invited to celebrate this important symbol of our identity by organizing their own events and by showing their pride on social media.

BANNERS: (Happy) Groundhog Day!

UPDATED: Groundhog Day consensus calls for early spring!

They have their 'Punxsutawney Phil' - we have our 'Wiarton Willie', and there are others that have joined in recently like 'Dundas Donna' of Toronto and la marmotte de Québec, 'Fred'...

Groundhog Day is a traditional holiday originating in the United States that is celebrated on February 2. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then the spring season will arrive early, some time before the vernal equinox; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its den, and winter weather will persist for six more weeks.

Groundhog Day was adopted in the U.S. in 1887. Clymer H. Freas was the editor of the local paper Punxsutawney Spirit at the time, and he began promoting the town’s groundhog as the official "Groundhog Day meteorologist".

The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, with Punxsutawney Phil. Groundhog Day, already a widely recognized and popular tradition, received widespread attention as a result of the 1993 film Groundhog Day.
